Implications of the CVA-01 had she been built

Link to CVA-01 Post: https://diamondsofthenight.home.blog/2020/10/10/cva-01-aircraft-carrier-2/

In a post I made I talked about the CVA-01 compared to the Kitty-Hawk but it was a mess but thanks to some feedback and suggestion gave this post so let’s begin

The CVA-01’s air wing was suppose to be up to 50 aircraft but apparently might have had room for 68.

It was suppose to have eighteen F-4K Phantom two but was apparently able to carry eighteen more and had eighteen Blackburn Buccaneer S.2C or S.2D Strike aircraft with two or four Blackburn Buccaneer S.2 coverted tankers with four Fairey Gannet AEW Mk.3 for Airborne Early Warning and single Gannet COD.4 with five Westland WS-61 Sea King HAS.1 for Anti-Submarine Warfare and two Westland WS-58 Wessex HAS.1 Anti-Submarine Warfare converted to Search and Rescue

So the CVA-01’s being built has implications are more interesting as it raises questions

1. Does the Royal Navy drop funding of Harrier in favour of fixed-wing naval aviation?

A. Somehow I don’t think so as there was a need for the Harrier so yeah the Sea Harrier would probably get built to give close air support to the Royal Marines and as the Invincible Class were originally suppose to be Anti-Submarine Warfare carriers so in the end no they probably they’d keep funding the Sea Harrier

2. To build its airwing, does the Royal Navy continue to procure U.S. naval aircraft or does it instead focus on domestic production, or even a partnership with France?

A. Possibly they could’ve bought the F-14s as the RAF did consider it although rejected it although maybe later when they needed to modernise the carrier air wing they could’ve bought Rafale Ms although maybe the Eurofighter Typhoon’s navalised proposal probably would replaced the F4 & Buccaneer

3. How does CVA-1 perform in the Falklands campaign and how does it influence it? Follow-up, does the Falklands War even happen. Argentina’s entire military case for their invasion was a perceived inability of the Royal Navy to project force in the South Atlantic. Does CVA-1, with a far more robust and longer range airwing, change their calculation? I’d argue it does

A. The CVA-01s likely would’ve been the flagships of the taskforce along with the Invincible and Centaur class light aircraft carrier making up the carrier force, the destroyer force would be the Bristol class, Sheffield class and County class Destroyers, the frigate force would’ve been made of the Broadsword class, Amazon class, Leander class and Rotesay class frigates.

The Landing ship force would’ve been the Fearless class and Round-table class landing ships with castle class offshore patrol ship and a large fleet of supply ships which would have been Fort Roselie class, Tide class, Oi-class, Leaf class and Rover class supply ship

Musn’t forget the Submarine force that would’ve been the Valiant class, Churchill class and Swiftsure class SSNs and Oberon class attack submarines.

Odds are had the British had the CVA-01s in the Falkland task force they had then the war would’ve been easier as the F-4Ks could do combat air patrol over the fleet and would have given the British complete air supremacy as they’d have been facing the Argentine Air Force French Dassault Mirage 3E & Israeli-made IAI Dagger A fighters and US-made Douglas A-4B & A-4C Skyhawk and Argentina’s own IA-58A Pucara ground-attack turboprops and British-made English-Electric Canberra B.62 jet bombers as the Mirage 3s were packing two 30mm Defa 552 Revolver Cannons with 250 rounds and two R.550 Magic and one R.530 missiles while the Daggers had the 30mm cannon and R.550 Magic 1s

When compared the British Phantoms which likely would’ve had the four AIM-9L Sidewinders and up to six AIM-7D Sparrows which would have probably meant the F-4s could get more shots on target.

Once the Argentine Air Force was crushed as the Buccaneers would have probably gutted the Argentine Navy probably sinking their both their carrier group which were made of a lone colossus-class light aircraft carrier and their southern strike group of a Brookyln Class Light Cruiser and Allen.M.Summer Class Destroyers and the fleet tankers assigned to their respective task force fleets leaving their Navy severely crippled.

Although its more likely the Argentines wouldn’t have bothered to invade to begin with…..

However it should be kept in mind that the Argentine military junta were deeply unpopular at the time so odds they probably would tried anyway but then how much worse would the Argentine military be today I wonder?

4. How does the construction of CVA-1 influence Royal Navy shipbuilding for the second half of the 20th Century and beyond?

A. Most likely the Royal Navy would’ve continued with CATOBAR carrier in the Queen Elizabeth Class or an improved carrier based on the CVA-01 with a newer powerplant similar but an enlarged version of an Integrated Electric Propulsion type system like the one used on the Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers with F-35Bs replacing the Harriers and F-35Cs replacing whatever the CVA-01 used in place of the F-4s and Buccaneers.

The most probable replacement for the F-4K Phantom 2 and Buccaneer S.2 would be the Navalised version of Hawker-Siddeley HS.1207 or as i dub her the Wasp in the fighter role and Hawker-Siddeley HS.1197 Buccaneer S.3 strike aircraft.

Sadly the CVA-01 was cancelled shame really as she would’ve been a good asset to the Royal Navy and presumably NATO as well.

Why I feel its highly unlikely we’ll get a WW2 Ace Combat

I have seen in polls that some want a WW2 Ace Combat Video Game and I know there are a few or some who’d like an Ace Combat game set around WW2 or the 1940s but I have to drop cold water on that for several reasons

To rehash a previous point form my WW1 Post the few jets, weapon options and surviving aircraft would cause problems but this time I think there is more than just this

Side note: as a point I’ll link to a post on a Japanese WW2 plane in the UK https://www.reddit.com/r/acecombat/comments/ktqbuw/uks_rare_japanese_ww2_aircraft/

Next is the matter of Japan’s very messy history of the Imperial Japanese Empire and how it affected the countries Japan invaded and with atrocities that Japan committed back then which I will not name and technically not how sure which countries, it is but there is likely lingering resentment against Japan for the atrocities committed, in fact Germany and Italy go out of their way to make sure that when Germany and Italy were at their worst is not taught and is some things actually illegal to show.

The PA when they used them in AC0 for Belka drawing on Nazi Germany and Erusea apparently drawing on Fascist Italy yeah the writers of those game probably had to be very careful and in today’s climate, Yeah I’d think the PA Team would play safe and not want to risk causing controversy as that’s the last thing they need as it would hurt the game when trying to sell it

Yeah the Sky crawlers is likely the best we’re gonna get as I’ll re-iterate with a comment I made on my ww1 post and I quote: the earliest we’d probably go is the 1950s at best

Why the 50s is the earliest well they’d have jets form that era to look at for the game and have more special weapon options to choose from and they’d not have any controversy risk of Japan’s messy history

Update: I just realised something else the complicated ship classification system in use back then and aircraft role classifications

why I can’t see a WW1 era Ace Combat

So I know there are a tiny few who want a WW1 era AC Game to cover the Osean War of 1905 to 1910 but don’t think we’ll see that for 1 reason the lack of surviving WW1-era planes

Why?

Well presumably when the PA Team are making the assets for the game they’d want to use examples of the aircraft that exist which is the problem with WW1 Bi and Tri-planes as with WW2, Cold War and Modern stuff there are enough that they can get pics however there are few WW1 Era planes that exist today with some ww1 aircraft not surviving today at all which is a really major setback as a picture can only give a limited information

So as much as it would be nice to have a WW1 era game given the lack of models from that time I honestly don’t believe there will be one

Osean turbine conversions part 3 – C-123T Provider

Following on from the C-97J Stratofreighter and C-121F Super Constellation the 3rd turbine conversion is C-123T Provider which was converted from B and K-model Provider transport but it has few variants So before I get into the base model and its variants A bit of background to explain where this idea came form.

In the 1970s the Royal Thai air force had a fleet of C-123K Providers and they attempted to extend its service life by replacing the two 2500 horsepower R2800-99W radial engines with two 4200 horsepower T56-7 turboprops but it wasn’t successful but in Strangereal however Osean used the T-model Provider as a short range transport plane until the C-27J Spartans replaced them.

The base model C-123T Provider which could carry 61 troops or 24,000ib of cargo which Osea used to replace their R2800 powered Providers.

These Providers served in the Belkan War ferrying troops and Supplies to Ustio after it was liberated and now onto the OADF variants.

The VC-123T Provider is the VIP Transport variant that was used to ferry the commander of the Osean Forces on the border with Belka.

The UC-123T Provider is a modified cargo plane for de-forestation and pest control operations like the infamous IRL Agent Orange program from the 1970s where the USAF sprayed dixoins over the forests of North Vietnam to destroy forests that the North Vietnamese Army were using for Guerilla Warfare but caused major health problems in the decades after the Vietnam War but I could see Osea using de-forestation to clear forest to allow their troops to cross Belka’s forests however I would expect Harling’s Government would handle the clean-up and whatever likely health issues came up.

The Osean Air Force wasn’t the only branch to use the Turbo Provider as this aircraft was known and the other branch was the Osean Coastguard as the HC-123T Provider which like its propeller predecessor the HC-123B Provider was used by the coastguard as a short range Search and Rescue plane which they used until after the Belkan War then retired them into long term storage until being refurbished and sold to UPEO for Search and Rescue

now a final new variant I just thought up The AC-123T Provider which were medium sized gunships that were placed between the small AC-47T Spookies and the AC-130 fleet it was armed with one 105mm M102 Howitzer with 100 rounds and two 7.62mm GAU-2A Miniguns with 15550 rounds

Osea originally used some modified C-123Ks as AC-123K night-time surveillance planes which had bomb bay with a capacity of 2000ibs of munitions but the T-model did away with the bomb bay in favour of a full gunship but ultimately the Provider gunships were retired and mostly scrapped

so this is the end of the Osean turbine conversion series I hope you all enjoyed this series of posts and I’ll catch y’all next time

Osean turbine conversions part 2 – C-121F Super Constellation

Following on from the C-97J Stratofreighter the 2nd turbine conversion is c-121f super constellation which was a turbine conversion of the C and G-model super constellation transports replacing the unreliable R3350-30W radial piston engines producing 14,800 horsepower with T34-6 turboprop engines totalling 22,120 horsepower and like the Stratofreighter it has multiple modifications so let’s dive in

The C-121F Super Constellation is the Troop and Cargo Transport plane which had a crew of 4 to 15 and could carry 87 to 106 Passengers or 24,200ibs of Cargo while its Medical Evacuation role could take 73 stretchers the Osean military used this in their Northern territories shuttling people and cargo around between Osea and Ustio in the pre-belkan war years until 757 based C-32B transports replaced them in 1998.

The First of the modifications is the Electronic Intelligence recording, Airborne Early Warning and Psychological Warfare aircraft the EC-121V Coronet Solo II aircraft which shares the name of the Osean Maritime Defense Force’s EC-121S Coronet Solo aircraft, it replaced the fleet of retired EC-121s and served till the newer E-767s Airborne Early Warning and the Psychological Warfare EC-130J Commando Solo replaced it.

The second variant of the new Super Constellation is the RC-121W Warning Star II is Reconnaissance spy plane which took over the job of its piston predecessor the RC-121C Warning Star aircraft but when the Osean Air Force used the older C-model there was confusion among what it was as its designation was of a spy plane instead of an airborne early warning plane so Osea used a handful as Signals intelligence spy planes until RC-135 Fleet came into service however the RC-121W Warning Star II stuck around till the RC-12 Guardrail and newer Rivet Joints replaced it.

Onto variant number 3 the TC-121F Super Constellation multiple engined trainer which replaced the obsolete TC-121C and G Super Constellations that the Osean Air Force used as trainers for their large transport planes, this modification were ultimately replaced by small twin engine engine trainers like the T-1 Jayhawk which was more efficient than the TC-121F.

Up next is the fourth special modification the VC-121Y Super Constellation Vip Transport plane that Osea created to replace their fleet of C, E and G-model Super Constellation Vip Transports and to relieve strain on the fleet of Stratolifter and Stratoliner Vip Transport planes until it was retired in 1996 and replaced by the 727 based C-22C transport plane.

If you thought the Osean Air Force were the only operators of this aircraft well you would be mistaken as the Osean Navy used a version to replace ageing WC-121N Super Constellation hurricane hunting aircraft and supplement their WP-3A Orion Weather Reconnaissance planes, The Osean Navy called this plane the WC-121Z Super Constellation and it served until the Osean navy retired both WP-3A Orion and WC-121Z Super Constellation in favour of letting the Osean Air Defence Force took on Hurricane reconnaissance flights.

Now like before I have a design to pass on and that is the EC-121V Coronet Solo II

a forest green and desert camouflaged EC-121V Coronet Solo Two that had four T34-6 Turboprops that electronic equipment fixed on the top of the fuselage and on the belly and sensors on the wingtip.

Osean turbine conversions part 1 – C-97J Stratofreighter

i was browsing the web ages ago and came across the experimental turbine modifications of some propliner transports that the USAF experimented with in the 50s and 60s and it gave me an idea that Osea actually made and used these turbine conversions until the years after the belkan war as they were stop gaps till Osea got the aircraft it wanted so i’ll start with the C-97 Stratofreighter which was converted from the R4360-59B radial engines which produced 13,000 horsepower to the T34-5 turboprops totalling 20,900 horsepower the J-model variants replaced their piston powered versions however the C-124B Globemaster 2 will not be used as its job had been taken by the Starlifter.

The C-97J Stratofreighter is the base cargo and troop transport version that could carry 134 troops or 75000ibs of cargo with a crew of 6 to 7 now onto its modifications

The EC-97J Stratofreighter is an electronic intelligence gathering aircraft that Osea would use to spy on Belka until being replaced by the EC-`130E aircraft.

now onto the 2nd modification the HC-97J Stratofreighter Search and Rescue aircraft now i can guess what you are thinking why does Osea need this plane when they’d have the HC-130H, N and P Combat Kings well they are for Combat Search and Rescue operations but the HC-97G Stratofreighter and its turbine variant the HC-97J Stratofreighter built for Search and Rescue operations until they were replaced by HC-130Js.

Now we move onto the aircraft Osea kept in use the longest out of the variants the KC-97J Stratofreighter tanker which could carry Osea built to serve as their helicopter refueller for the Search and Rescue UH-60Js until the KC-130H hercules came into service but if you’re wondering what these variants looked like well i’ll show you at the end now onto to our last 2 modifications.

now our fourth modification is the MC-97J Stratofreighter Medical Evacuation Transport which does what its job suggests it can carry the wounded and was designed to replace the MC-54A Skymaster, MC-54M Skymaster, MC-97G Stratofreighter and MC-119J Flying Boxcar medical evacuation transports and could carry 69 Medical Evacuation passengers but this one was replaced by Globemaster 3s

and last but not least the final modification the VC-97J Stratofreighter which was designed as VIP Transport and took over from the fleet of VC-54 Skymasters, VC-97D Stratofreighter and VC-123B providers although it was the first to go in the post Belkan war disarmament.

so i said i’d show you what these variants looked like but the C-97J shares the same design as the HC-97J, MC-97J and VC-97J

C-97j stratofreighter
a silver C-97J Stratofreighter that had a double-bubble type fuselage with four T34-5 turbine engines mounted on its wing with two underwing pods.

Ec-97J Stratofreighter

a light grey EC-97J Stratofreighter that had Electronic intel gathering equipment fixed to its rear fuselage

Kc-97j Stratofreighter

a silvery grey KC-97J Stratofreighter had a double-bubble fuselage with a straight wing that had four T34-5 Turboprops and two pods between the engines fixed near the outboard engines. The fuselage had a cargo door midway across the forward fuselage with a refuelling boom fixed on the rear fuselage with a refueling hose fixed inside the rear fuselage.

so this covers the C-97J Stratofreighter next time i’ll be covering the c-121f super constellation

see ya all soon

My Ustio Navy

yes I know Ustio is not confirmed to have a navy but its likely they have a small navy like the irl Switzerland

For the Combat ships would be the pt-16 class gunboats as they are more efficient and faster than the older Aquarius class gunboats and speaking of the Aquarius class

I think Ustio would convert Aquarius class gunboat into utility boats so personnel can be shuttled by sea.

The Ustio Navy would operate aircraft such as the B1900C and B1900D commuter planes as cargo transport and use the ADS-95 Ranger UAV for reconnaissance as for the VIP Transport would be served by a B1900C-1 aircraft and the Utility plane would be the B200 Super King Air modified into B1300 Commuter planes.

when it comes to helicopter force the Ustio Navy would use an EC132T2+ helicopter for VIP Transport and Utility duties
